Meet the Pastor
Greetings!
My name is Mat Alexander and I am the pastor of Sunnyside Baptist Church. I would like to personally invite you to come visit our church. I am thrilled to be a part of this church, and I am confident that you will find us to be a group of warm, loving people who are excited to be a part of what God is doing.
Originally from Boaz, AL, I graduated from the University of Mobile in Mobile, AL in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Humanities. I am currently a student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville where I am pursuing a Master of Divinity degree.
Before serving at Sunnyside, I was the pastoral intern at Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, AL for 2 years, then was the full time minister to college students there for a year as well.
I married the beautiful Whitney Walker in 2008. We live in the parsonage next to the church, and are expecting our first child in late November. We love each other, and are thrilled to be sharing our lives with Sunnyside.
Sunnyside is an old country church. We sing hymns and have pot-luck suppers and are an institution in the community. Many of our church members have had family here for generations, and we are a fixture in the Knob Creek community. However, we are also more than just an old country church. We are, most importantly, a church that seeks to live in fellowship with God and one another through the work of Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. We are God-exalting, Spirit-driven, and Christ-centered.

We are committed to the Bible as the inerrant, sufficient Word of God, therefore my preaching and our church practice reflect that. We want people to encounter the risen Christ, and are thankful for the fact God had the Gospel written down for us. We believe the Gospel message has the primacy in the Scripture, and therefore the Gospel message has primacy in the faith and practice of our church.
